Do I need electric brakes in my vehicle? 

There are rules around towing vehicles in Australia for when you will be required to have electric brakes fitted to the vehicle.

By law, electric brakes are not required when towing vehicles that have a load weight of 0 – 750 kg.

Electric brakes become mandatory by law when towing trailers with a loaded weight between 750 – 2000 kg.

For trailers with a loaded weight of 2001 – 4500 kg, automatic breakaway systems and electric brakes are required by law. 

What do electric brakes do and why are they needed? 

When towing a vehicle with loaded weights in excess of 750kg, it is mandatory to use Electric Brakes. The reason for this is that it takes more than just the tow vehicle’s brakes to bring the vehicle and the trailer to a complete stop within a suitable time frame. Considering the trailer weight and speed, it is important that the braking is shared across both the vehicle and the caravan / trailer. 

A brake controller is an electronic device that activates and, as the word suggests, controls the electric brakes of a trailer.

Without the use of electric brakes, the 12v tow vehicle would be expected to perform all of the braking of the vehicle in order to slow or stop both the vehicle and Caravan. If you can imagine, the weight of a 2000kg trailer on a steep decline, only being stopped by the tow vehicle brakes, would cause a massive sway

Do all electric brake units need to be hardwired into the vehicle?
