Why install Accessory outlets?
Independent power is a luxury that many of us like to enjoy when away from mains power. This power is usually generated from the use of a battery set up. But how do we harness the power from the battery to provide an easy outlet for us to connect our accessories such as our fridge, lighting, air compressors and more?
It's simple really, we look to install 12 volt accessory sockets. These plug / sockets will connect to a power feed back to the battery and will allow you the option to run those much loved devices!
What is an Accessory Plug?
The Accessory plug is considered the 'male' end of a 12 Volt connection. This type of connection will usually fit 'within' a 12 volt socket.
The Accessory Plate is a flush mount option for a 12 volt socket connection.
The 12 volt accessory socket / accessory plate considered as the female side of a 12 volt connection and is often designed as a flush mount / recessed option. In this option, the user will drill into the surface that they are choosing to mount the plate, to allow the sockets and the plate to sit virtually flush against the surface. This option can sometimes be considered as a 'tidy design' and is a common approach to installations where the user has the depth for the sockets to sit within.
These flush mount plates are available as Anderson plates, cigarette plates, or even a flush mount Anderson with 12 volt socket.
There are so many designs, how I do know what to choose?
When choosing a 12 volt Accessory connection, it is important to look at what you are running from the battery. Every individual socket will have a differing amperage rating (how much power the socket can handle) in order to run appliances.
On the other hand, the higher draw appliances are better suited to an Anderson connector. The most common Anderson connector used in vehicle / camping installations are 50 Amp Anderson connectors. These are common connections for fridges, Inverters, air compressors and other heavier draw appliances.

What are 12 Volt switch panels used for?

It is quite common to use 12v switch panels to switch loads such as fridges, inverters, accessory sockets, or even at time, solar panels.
